The problem

My research activity, while also involving other areas of hepatology, has been mainly focused on the management of the main complications of advanced liver disease (i.e., ascites, hyponatremia, acute kidney injury (AKI), hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), variceal bleeding and hepatic encephalopathy), and liver transplantation.

The approach

My research group works on the pathophysiology and complication of chronic and acute-on-chronic liver diseases both on experimental and clinical ground, and collaborates with several Italian and foreign research centres.

Main discoveries and innovations

  • Contribution to the guidelines and/or position papers on the management of ascites, bacterial infections and AKI and ACLF in patients with cirrhosis for the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
  • New diagnostic criteria for AKI and HRS in patients with cirrhosis as a result of a consensus process with almost all the international experts in this field
  • Development of the treatment of HRS–AKI with terlipressin and albumin
  • Development of a new approach in the antibiotic treatment of bacterial infections in patients with cirrhosis
  • Definition and diagnostic criteria of acute decompensation, non-acute decompensation and ACLF in patients with cirrhosis
