The problem

My research interests include prognostic modeling in intensive care and the use of liver transplantation in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), and the pathogenesis and management of multiple organ failure, hepatic encephalopathy and coagulopathy in people with chronic liver disease.

The approach

Leading national and international collaborative research projects to charecterize and understand critical illness in liver disease and develop effective interventions to improve outcome. Utilizing ‘big data’ and ethnographic approaches to understand inequalities in outcome and the effect of stigma in the care of hospital in-patients with chronic liver disease.

Main discoveries and innovations

  • Pioneered the use of high volume hemofiltration for the control of hyperammonemia in critical illness and developed national criteria for utilization of emergency liver transplantation in acute liver failure.
  • Initiated and led United Kingdom program of prioritized liver transplantation for ACLF.
