“Since I was a little girl I wanted to be a medical doctor but was later, during my residency, when I was really involved in scientific studies and discovered I wanted to do it for a living and become a physician scientist”, says Virginia.

Virginia is currently Senior Specialist in Hepatology in the Liver Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona-IDIBAPS, Spain. She has an interest in the management of complications of portal hypertension – elevated blood pressure in the portal vein and smaller veins that branch off from it – and vascular liver diseases. Virginia’s research focuses on liver endothelial dysfunction in liver diseases.

Virginia is Scientific Committee member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), Secretary of the Vascular Liver Disease Group (VALDIG), Governing Board member of the European Reference Network (ERN) Rare-Liver, and Co-Chair of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Subcommittee on Hemostatic Management of Patients with Liver Diseases. She also serves as Associate Editor of Liver International and has recently been appointed member of the Inspiring and Writing Group at EF CLIF.
