The one day session main focus was on acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). This syndrome was described three years ago in the CANONIC study by a number of investigators associated to the EASL-CLIF Consortium, leading to subsequent ancillary studies covering particular aspects of this syndrome. The findings of these studies have represented a paradigm shift in the study of this syndrome associated with liver cirrhosis, and opens new perspectives in the study of chronic liver diseases.

Prof. Vicente Arroyo, President of the Board of Trustees of the EF CLIF, opened the sessions in which 15 speakers presented different aspects related to ACLF from different perspectives. Speakers presented some research advances and introduced future research in ACLF. The novelty of this topic raised wide interest among the audience and stimulated their active participation during the event.

The symposium was the first major scientific event organized by EF CLIF since its establishment in mid-2015, and has served as a public presentation of its activities and projects to the international hepatology community.
