Prof. Alberto Farias has been appointed Full Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, Brazil, recognizing his longstanding contributions to cirrhosis research, liver transplantation, and coagulation disorders in liver disease. In this interview, he reflects on his career journey, key scientific contributions, and his vision for the future of collaborative gastroenterological research in Latin America and beyond.
Prof. Alberto Farias has been appointed Full Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, marking a significant milestone in a career dedicated to advancing clinical research, patient care, and medical education in hepatology.
A leading expert in cirrhosis and liver transplantation, Prof. Farias currently serves as Clinical Director of the Liver Transplantation Program at the University of São Paulo. His academic trajectory includes a fellowship at the University of Aix-Marseille II and recognition as a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), reflecting his longstanding engagement with the international hepatology community.
His research has focused primarily on coagulation disorders in liver disease, with impactful contributions that have helped reshape clinical practice. Among his most notable achievements, Prof. Farias designed a pivotal study demonstrating the detrimental effects of fresh frozen plasma transfusion in patients with cirrhosis—findings that were published in the Journal of Hepatology and subsequently incorporated into clinical guidelines. He has also contributed to international collaborative efforts, including the PROC-BLeeD project on bleeding risk in invasive procedures, and more recently, he has worked with EF CLIF as manager of the ACLARA consortium and author of key consortium publications.
Reflecting on his appointment, Prof. Farias said:
“I am deeply honored by my appointment as Full Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the University of São Paulo, one of Latin America’s most prestigious academic institutions. This recognition reflects not only years of dedication to clinical research, patient care and education but also reaffirms my commitment to advancing gastrointestinal health in our region. Personally, it is a moment of great pride; professionally, it marks a new chapter of responsibility and opportunity—to mentor future leaders, to deepen our scientific contributions, and to further elevate the global presence of Latin American medicine.”
Looking ahead, Prof. Farias aims to further strengthen a collaborative and innovation-driven research environment within his department, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships and expanding international collaborations to address pressing gastrointestinal and liver-related health challenges in Latin America and beyond.
“I aim to foster a dynamic and collaborative environment that drives innovation and excellence in gastroenterological research”, he explained. “I aim to strengthen interdisciplinary partnerships, attract new talent, and expand our international collaborations to address pressing health challenges in Latin America and beyond.”
He also expressed gratitude to the mentors and colleagues who have shaped his career path, and in particular to Professor Flair Carrilho, whose leadership helped build the foundation of the department, and Professor Vicente Arroyo, who facilitated his involvement with EF CLIF and enabled key international collaborations.
Prof. Farias’ appointment as Full Professor represents both recognition of his scientific contributions and a new phase of leadership in advancing translational research and academic excellence in hepatology.
