Each article in the supplement is authored by experts in the field, presenting diverse perspectives and identifying areas of unmet need and future research questions.
The first chapters describes the epidemiology and global burden of decompensated cirrhosis, trajectory of cirrhosis, the distinction between ACLF and disease progression, and predisposing factors and precipitating events of acute decompensation.
The next three chapters provide insights into the pathophysiological basis of decompensated cirrhosis including portal hypertension, circulatory dysfunction, inflammation, metabolism and mitochondria dysfunction, role of the microbiome, and mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of bacterial infections.
The final six chapters focus on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with decompensated cirrhosis covering topics such as disease-modifying approaches, management of complications like sarcopenia and frailty, intensive care management, and liver transplantation for patients with ACLF and multiorgan failure.
